How to read this
- Distribution rate is the issuer’s own annualized figure (for closed-end funds, the latest payout annualized on the market price). It isn’t a yield you’re promised.
- Return of capital is the share of the past year’s payouts that the issuer classified as giving your own investment back: final figures (Form 8937, year-end tax statement or annual report) where Gooseberry has them, 19a-1 estimates otherwise. A payout that a published Form 8937 leaves out counts as 0%. It isn’t taxed when paid, but it lowers your cost basis.
- Income-only yield is the distribution rate times the share that wasn’t return of capital: roughly what the fund paid out of income and gains.
- Total return is the issuer’s published 1-year return at net asset value, with payouts included.
